"Connecting artists to each other, if art can not be seen, then it can not be felt - appreciated -or supported"
Established in 1979, the Georgia Artist Guild of Albany is a member-driven organization striving to connect, educate and empower the talent pool of local visual artist through monthly meetings, establishing regular local exhibition spaces, juried shows and a newly created web presence.
http://
www.thegaga.org.
Although, as artists, we tend to be solitary animals, gathering as a group we can focus our individual efforts into purposeful action to benefit all of us and directly art as a whole. Our generally stated purpose is to stimulate interest appreciation and patronage for contemporary visual art. Through our activities we hope to encourage and support creative individuals in the production of their work and to foster good public relations throughout the many communities surrounding Albany.
Engaging the community through art, the current exhibition is one of those efforts. We seek to foster cooperation between the artists and the community.
While we have some support in the form of exhibition space from organizations like the Albany Area Arts Council, Albany Museum of Art, and Center for Art & Rehabilitative Energies, we are pushing to reinvigorate the presence of member artists in places where they can be seen by the public on a daily encounter.
The Invitational Exhibition will be on display from September 3rd through November 5th, 2023. An Opening Reception will take place, at the Center for Art & Rehabilitative Energies on Sunday 3rd from 2 PM to 6 PM. The Reception and Exhibition is open and free to the general public. Bring family and friends if you wish to do so. C.A.R.E. is located at 3696 Pearl Street in Shellman GA in a revoted onion barn constructed in the late 1940s. Ample off street parking is readily available located to the north side of the Art Gallery in the onion barn.

Exhibition Abstract
2020 CURO (grant) | Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities | Albany, GA
Art as Conservation + Technology
I intend to make original works of art that involve the conservation and restoration of existent art objects, as well as to create a record of their history. The result of these efforts will be a contemporary work of art that informs the public about recent history and visual culture through the fusion of traditional craft and current digital media, thus combining art and design.
The current project involves neon and argon signs originally installed on buildings, now kept in storage. Both the signs the original buildings for which they were created represent the popular aesthetic of the post WWII period involving modern structures featuring glass and steel. These buildings were used as motels, coffee houses, and gasoline stations all of which had neon signs. The signs represent the atmosphere of these years distinguished by the people’s self-confidence and optimism, derived from the post-war economic prosperity. The final results of my efforts will be an exhibition that will include paintings, text describing the signs, and video documentation of performative actions.
Methods for this project is to collaborate with my partner the Albany Museum of Art in Albany, GA. In addition, I plan to work with Classic City Neon in Athens, GA and Thronateeska Heritage Center in Albany, GA. Preserving the signs is an act of conservation that will make accessible to the public the mood of the 1940’s through the 60’s - a pivotal moment in the history of the United States.

Death to Life (2018)
By Edward Fox Newcomb
Given to the Diocese Of Georgia
Canvas, acrylic and paper
“Love is as strong as death. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals there of are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.”- Solomon 8:6. Death to Life is a four by six foot collage painting in remembrance, reflection, and recognition of the death of Deacon Jim Purks from Saint Paul’s Albany, which is my birth church. In this piece I used paper, latex glue, paint, and a clear coating in order to connect each material to the canvas together. This work has a background paint consisting of flat pink furniture paint, paper, ink, watercolor, and a gray wall paint wash over collaged groupings of blurred strips of eulogy from Deacon Ri Lamb. Using collage provided me with the opportunity to ask others for advice and or materials which helped to turn this work into a collaboration of those who loved and remember Deacon Jim. If you have the opportunity to take a document and cut it up you will notice the options this brings to your inner most verbiage which helped me to find the flow of words through the eulogy and obituary to bring new sentences to life. These new sentences are of LOVE. Deacon Jims portrait was brought to me by a great friend of mine named Grace. In memory of Deacon Jim, he was the man of the moment, a photographer, deacon, artist, lover, and a strong pursuer of embracing who we as human really are. This piece is in remembrance of life, light, love, and words which touch our deepest emotions.
